Description |
Bear clan mask made by Adam Welch. Carved wood with rounded nose and ears. A strap is attached on either side of the rear of the mask to attach to the face of the wearer. Adam Welch is a Cherokee artist well-known for his carving, though he didn't turn to the practice until later in life. Some of his favorite subjects are ducks, birds, and bears, like the black bear featured in this mask. Masks are traditionally used in Cherokee culture for various ceremonial purposes, and often depicted animals, as well as the seven Cherokee clans. The Cherokee Seven Clans are a traditional social organization of Cherokee society and include: Blue, Long Hair, Bird, Paint, Deer, Wild Potato, and Wolf. The Wild Potato Clan is also known as the Bear Clan. Masks are still used today in ceremonial dances. |
