J. Ottman Lithography, New York, NY On verso: 1888 monthly calendar; "Advice to Mothers. Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Sryup should always be used for Children Teething. It Soothes the Child. Softens the Gums. Allays all Pain. Cures Wind Colic, and is the Best Remedy for Diarrhea. Twenty-Five Cents a Bottle." in English, German, French. This is an advertisement for children's "soothing syrup" that contained morphine. Morphine was isolated from opium in 1805, and used for the treatment of sleeplessness and illnesses such as coughs, smallpox, cholera, malaria, syphilis, dysentery, and tuberculosis. This particular patent medicine was marketed to mothers to help soothe their baby's discomfort when teething. Before massive reform and the requirement of dosage information, countless children died due to overdoses on medicines like this. |
