Description |
"Hippoglossum Bislingua," hand-colored copperplate engraving, Plate 128 from "Herbarium Blackwellianum, Selectum sive Collectio Stirpium or Sammlung der Gewache," by Christopher Jacob Trew, revised German edition, Nuremberg, 1757-1773. After Elizabeth Blackwell's "A Curious Herbal," London, originally published 1737-1739. The engraver Nikolaus Freidrich Eisenberger produced 170 plates for the revised and expanded version of Elizabeth Blackwell's "A Curious Herbal," which was first published in 1737. Dr. Christopher Jacob Trew translated the herbal into German, added more information to the descriptions, and published the revised edition in Nuremberg, calling it "Herbarium Blackwellianum..." Dr. Christopher Jacob Trew was a wealthy physician in Nuremberg and a great flower enthusiast. Though Blackwell's "A Curious Herbal" was groundbreaking for its usefulness as a medical reference and depiction of many unknown New World plants, she was not a professionally trained naturalist, and some of her illustrations were deemed naive or awkward by Trew. Trew asked Eisenberger, a noted engraver specializing in botanicals, to make improved illustrations for this edition. |
