Description |
Cowboy mounted on a brown and white spotted horse facing front with his rifle pointed towards his left, wearing a brown hat, orange shirt, green neckerchief. Pink and blue plateau in the background with the cowboy silhoutted against a solid bright yellow sky and a large tan rock in the foreground. In 2020, the McClung Museum launched a virtual database to reach visitors and assist the university’s online learning. This Arthur Mitchell painting became a favorite of English 102 courses. Mitchell was a popular cover artist for Western dime store novels, or "pulp novels." With a stoic cowboy shooting into the distance, poised against a vast, colorful landscape, The Sharpshooter is a wonderful example of his cinematic style. The sensational imagery and tall tales of the Wild West sold well in Mitchell’s time and still do today. However, these idealized cowboys also reinforce frontier myths—including settler colonial claims to land and stereotypes of masculinity and race. |
