Description |
A black and white collotype photograph of an eagle ascending into flight, presented in 24 separate frames against a gridded background. Photograph is numbered sequentially in the negative, on a two-toned leaf, with letterpress title, plate number '770,' copyright, and date in the margin, 1887. Published in "Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements," (Serial, University of Pennsylvania, 1872-1885). Eadweard Muybridge Muybridge’s photographs were a perfect marriage of science and photography. Suspending his subjects in 1/1000th of a second against a numbered grid, Muybridge was the first individual to make photographs of micro-sequences of time. His innovative camera techniques enabled people to see things that otherwise occurred too rapidly for mere human perception. After successfully photographing a horse galloping, Muybridge was invited by University of Pennsylvania to continue his motion studies. He produced thousands of photographs of animal movements, such as this eagle, as well as human beings engaged in actions such as walking, running, and pole-vaulting. |
