Taster, Wine |
Description |
Silver wine taster. The small, shallow bowl has a simple ring handle. "I. Touchais," possibly the name of the owner, is engraved around the outside of the rim along with the hallmarks. Made in Angers, France, by a currently unidentified manufacturer. This shallow silver saucer is a wine taster, also known as a tastevin. They were sometimes worn around the neck on a loop of ribbon tied to the handle. The color of a wine, particularly red wine, was more easily judged in the shallow, reflective surface of the tastevin. In 18th century France, wine tasters were popular and personal objects often found bearing the name of the owner. |
