Description |
A three-quarter painting of Mary Magdalene in a brown dress with white cloth draped along midsection, against a dark background. Her face is turned to the side and she looks aside. This is a study painting of Mary Magdalene done by Knoxville artist Lloyd Branson for his larger work, "The Weeping Magdalene," held by the McClung Museum (1956.1.33). Lloyd Branson is one of Knoxville's most celebrated artists. Branson's study painting for the larger painting "The Weeping Magdalene," helps date the final work, and illustrates Branson's decision to portray Mary bare-breasted in his final painting. Branson's work combines Renaissance portrayals of Magdalene as either a repentant sinner casting away vanity and the rich, lustful lifestyle she had as a prostitute, or a pious, ecstatic Mary sustained in the wilderness by angels. |
