Description |
Tall, slim trunked trees to left with two figures below on high grassy bank, river on right. French painter Paul Desiré Trouillebert was known for his genre paintings and portraits, but turned to landscapes later in his career. He was a member of the Barbizon School, a group of French artists associated with the village of Barbizon and the Forest of Fontainebleau near Paris who transformed 19th century landscape painting. Though Barbizon School artists worked in a variety of styles, all shared an interest in naturalism, painting "en plein air," and pushing against idealized landscapes. Here, Trouillebert depicts two peasants alongside a riverbank in his typical romantic, loose brushwork. |
