Description |
Glazed porcelain plate. Emblematic figures of regal eagles, flaming torches, and a victory wreath encircle the initial "N" surmounted by a crown in overglaze gilt. Made by Sèvres, Seine-et-Oise, France. The Sèvres Porcelain company was purchased by French King Louis XVI in 1759 and remained closely tied with the French monarchy. Napoleon Bonaparte, the military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the 19th century, took advantage of these ceramics as tools of propaganda. Opulent dinner sets decorated with regal eagles, flaming torches, victory wreaths, and an "N" for his initial, articulated Napoleon’s identity as emperor and were popular collector items. |
