"Vienna Austriae," Frankfurt, c. 1649, engraving, map by Matthaus Merian Bird's-eye view of the walled city of Vienna. The Danube River is in the foreground, and the whole scene is bustling with human activity, from boats in the river to horse-drawn carriages to farmers tending their oxen. A key at the bottom identifies 42 individual sites throughout the city. This highly detailed view was originally published in Topographia Provinciarum Austriacarum, Merian's monumental work on the topography of Austria and northern Italy. |
