"Wild Turkey, Male," 1827, from "The Birds of America," Plate 1, double elephant folio edition, London, by John James Audubon. Colored aquatint engraving by W. H. Lizars. John James Audubon's Birds of America remains one of the largest and most respected collections of bird illustrations ever produced. This turkey comes from the original "double elephant folio" edition, whose life-size illustrations were done on the largest paper available at the time. The book, with its life-sized depictions of birds, was extremely expensive. Audubon struggled to sell subscriptions, but today it nevertheless remains the largest and most respected collection of bird illustrations ever published Audubon was taken with the turkey, which he called "one of the most interesting birds" indigenous to the US, assigning it the place of honor as the first plate in the book. |
