Description |
Dark brown wooden single-handled, bulbous body cup in bias-relief lozenge pattern between horizontal bands. A palm wine cup used by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "Prestige cups" (Mbwoongntey) are used by the Kuba peoples hold palm wine created from the sap of wild date palms. The wine is served to friends and associates as a sign of wealth and generosity. Today, drinking palm wine is an important part of many ceremonies and important events such as weddings, funerals, and birth celebrations. The designs on the cup are similar to those that can be found on Kuba handwoven raffia textiles. |
