Jar, Ginger |
Description |
Chinese ginger jar, blue and white ceramic, decorated with three panels of large abstract Chinese characters. "Ginger jar" is a common name for this type of porcelain jar, but a bit of a misnomer. While similar-shaped containers were used to export crystallized ginger and pickled food items from China, this jar was likely decorative. The jars were popular export items to America and Britain in the 19th century, when there was a craze for "blue and white" wares imported from Asia. |
