Description |
One of a pair of blue and white porcelain vases, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period, 1662-1722. The egg-shaped jar is decorated in an underglaze blue floral design, with gilt bronze mounts on the top and base. The bronze mounts date to the 18th century, while the jar dates to the reign of the Kangxi emperor. Traditional blue-and-white porcelains of the Kangxi Period held special esteem among Western collectors, who considered them classic examples of the golden age of Chinese porcelain. Though the vase was likely made in the 17th-18th centuries, the bronze pedestal and lip decorations were likely added by a Western consumer in the 19th century to fit their tastes. Ironically, consumer demands for "authentic" porcelain, and backlash against industrial mass production, resulted in many traditional Chinese designs changing to fit foreign tastes |
