Description |
Glazed porcelain urn. It is composed of three parts, including the urn, lid, and pedestal base. The urn has a bulbous body decorated with hand made and hand applied flowers. On one side is a garden scene with an 18th century peasant couple. On the other side are multi-colored hand painted flowers. Two cupids are poised on flowers on the finial. Made by Carl Thieme, Saechsische (Saxony) Porcelain Factory, Potschappel, Germany. Meissen porcelain made in the royal factories at Meissen, Germany, was the first hard-paste porcelain to be made in Europe. Hard paste porcelain, also known as "white gold," was a highly prized commodity that until then, was imported from Asia. Also sometimes called Dresden ware for Meissen's proximity to Dresden, figural porcelains appealing to European tastes were a signature of these porcelain makers. This highly decorated urn, meant for a table decoration in a wealthy household, features modeled cupids, flowers, and women's faces, as well as hand-painted decorations, including a romantic peasant couple. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, highly decorated Rococo designs were revived by porcelain makers. Rococo is the name for an international art style of the 18th century, characterized by naturalistic and heavily embellished ornamentation. |
