Description |
A taxidermied passenger pigeon of unknown origins. In 1990, when this was exhibited as an object of the month at the museum, there were probably no more than 250 mounted specimens. The decimation of the passenger pigeon began in earnest in the late 1700s when the bird was hunted for sport to supply big city markets. By the 19th century, they were in decline, and the bird became extinct in 1914 due to overhunting and environmental degradation. The last surviving bird was at the Zoological gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio. |
