Printed pictorial poster [Most likely Shanghai]: The Da Tong Printing Factory, 1953 Literature: Jean-Yves Bajon, Les Annëes Mao, illustrated on p. 14. This poster illustrates 63 members of the People's Republic of China (PRC) government, presided over by Mao Ze Dong, surrounded by his six vice presidents. In 1949, Mao Zedong announced the 21 September 1949 establishment of the Communist PRC before a massive crowd at Beijing Square. By the end of the year, the CPC became the major ruling party in China. On the front row, from left to right are Gao Gang, the future leader of the five-year plan, Li Ji Shen, Liu Shao Qi, Mao Ze Dong, Zhu De, Sun Jing Ling (Madame Sun Ya Tsen), and Zhang Lan. Zhou En Lai, Prime Minister, is in the third row (second from the left), and Deng Xiao Ping, political commissar of the south-west (his region of origin), and on the fifth row (first from the left). Lin Biao is in the second row (from the left from the left). (Bajon, pg. 14) Complicated Chinese characters are used on this poster, dating it in the early 1950s. During the 1950s, simplified characters came into use to improve literacy rates. Next to each portrait "after liberation" and "before liberation" titles are printed. The 6 vice chairs of the Central Government Committee are on the top, first row. The other figures are more minor positions who all serve on this central committee. |
