Description |
A black and white depiction of a Rufous breasted Antthrush in undergrowth vegetation. The verso text misidentifies it as Formicarius rufipectus carrikeri. Written on verso: [Rufous breasted ] Thrush (Formicarius rufipectus carrikeri) Louis Agassiz Fuertes was named after the famous naturalist, but should not be confused with him, and was an ornithologist and illustrator in his own right. This particular painting is very well executed, and gives a sense of how difficult it would be to spot the Rufous-breasted Antthrush in the forest floor habitat across South America. The bird, which characteristically walks like a chicken, is found in Costa Rica and western Panama, as well as along the slopes of the Andes in Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, and the Amazonian foothills in Peru. It is usually seen singly or in pairs throughout the forest, where its rufous (reddish-brown or brownish-red color) underparts can make it difficult to spot on the forest floor. |
