"Flag of Knoxville," c. 1896, watercolor on paper by Lloyd Branson. Inscribed lower right in black ink: Sketched by the / author of the design / Lloyd Branson / and presented to Jno. W. Green Lloyd Branson (1853–1925) is one of Knoxville’s most celebrated artists. After studying art in New York and abroad, he returned to Knoxville, and by 1880, he had helped open the McCrary and Branson Studio, which created photographic and painted portraits. Knoxville artist Lloyd Branson executed this winning design for a proposed Knoxville flag. At center is the "Wheel of Progress," and contained within, a shield of Knoxville, 9 stars for the city divisions in 1896, a sheaf of wheat and shock of corn symbolizing agriculture, and the date 1791 to note Knoxville's founding year. The Shield of Knoxville has representations of a derrick for the marble industry, crossed picks for mining, an engine for commerce, and a factory for industry. |
