Description |
One of six porcelain chocolate cups with matching saucers. The small square cup has a curved rim and is cobalt blue, with a gold band on the inside and outside of the rim, a gold handle, and small gold flowers on the side. Mark of Richard-Ginori Pittoria di Doccia. During the 1800s, it became fashionable to serve extra strong black coffee in small demitasse (French for "half cup") cups after dinner. These are made by the luxury porcelain manufacturer Richard-Ginori and were purchased by the donors when they lived in Italy. The Greek key and egg-and-dart patterns speak to the broad 19th century interest in Classical design motifs. |
