Description |
Oval shaped basket tray with handles on each end, six spiral designs on interior. The Coushatta, who have been centered near Elton, Louisiana from 1800 to today, are known for high quality traditional arts, most notably baskets woven from swamp cane or longleaf pine needles. The artist, Zeline Sylestine is a well-known tribal member and basket maker. Traditionally, baskets were made for gathering and storing food. Contemporary baskets are often decorated with geometric designs and pine cones. To make the baskets, long-leaf pine needles are gathered, dried, and then coiled into baskets using raffia and sewing needles. Today, because of widespread clearcutting by timber companies, it is difficult to obtain longleaf pine needles for basket making. |
