Description |
Brass tray from Istanbul, Turkey. Brass, embossed, stamped, engraved. Circular, folded rim, center circle with interlaced vines, flowering plants, and animals encircled by bands of epithets. Decorated with embossed, stamped, and engraved motifs, the center circle contains interlaced vines, flowering plants, and animals encircled by epithets that translate to "the sultan," "the just," "the king," and "the learned." Six roundels, or disks, denoting perfect balance have figures within architectural frameworks, perhaps as stylized representations of a sultan and his advisors. Metalwork is an important part of Islamic art, as the Qur'an associates fine metals with heavenly adornment and the pleasures of the afterlife. |
