Description |
Dresden ware glazed porcelain sherbet cup decorated by Ambrosius Lamm. The pedestalled cup has a band around the middle with images of men and women (courting couples) in various poses. The inside is also highly decorated with overglaze gold flower designs. Mark of Charles Ahrenfeldt, Limoges, France (cup); mark of A. Lamm, Dresden, Germany (painted decorations). Fine homes at the turn of the century dazzled with table wares such as this sherbet cup and saucer. Sherbet is a "cooling drink" made from water and fruit juice. Porcelain painter Ambrosius Lamm’s studio was known for decorative wares, typically featuring detailed figures like the 18th century rural scenes on the cup, and impasto work (raised gilt paste decorations). |
