Description |
Chinese Sancai glazed earthenware ovoid jar and cover, Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). Spherical shaped jar with circular cover, with a surface glazed in brown, green and straw colors. The Chinese Tang Dynasty (619-907 CE) was a period of marked prosperity and political stability, resulting in widespread trade and a flourishing of the arts. Polychrome pieces, frequently referred to as sancai, or "three-color" ware, may bear anywhere from two to ten different colored lead glazes, with amber, blue and green being the most common. These vessels are commonly called apple jars and differ in the detail of the glazes and the molded edge on the lip and the cover. Because of the small size, the glazes are extremely difficult to control and the potting must be perfect. |
