Description |
"Arab Chieftain," 1912, oil on canvas by Henriette Wachman. Henriette Wachman played a pivotal role in Emma Thompson’s 2021 exhibition Women’s Work here at the McClung. Wachman paved the way for other women to travel the world and independently create art. Her works—such as this sensitively rendered portrait likely painted in Tunisia—appealed to Western consumers. Yet, they also speak to an audience who viewed North Africa as homogenous and exotic, rather than a diverse area of rich cultures. |
