Description |
Portrait of Miss Tillie (Matilda) McClung, daughter of Frank H. McClung. Tillie McClung died in 1873 at age thirteen. Lloyd Branson was one of Knoxville’s most celebrated artists. His wealthy clients often commissioned him for portraits, and Branson typically worked from photographs to create them. This could lead to stiff-looking subjects, yet his post-mortem portrait of Matilda "Tillie" McClung stands out for its sensitivity. Tillie tragically died of typhoid at 14, and Branson delicately painted her with a thoughtful, melancholy expression. In 2020, University of Tennessee students chose Tillie McClung for a conservation campaign. Through their efforts and donor support, this beloved painting was repaired and will remain stable for years to come. |
