C. Christopher Krutch was born near Knoxville in 1849; lived a few years in Atlanta; painted mountain scenery in Tennessee exclusively for more thatn 30 years. Earned a living as a portrait photographer in Knoxville; was a self taught artist, did oils and watercolors, spent most of his life in mountain areas of East Tennessee. Commissioned by Chief Justice E. T. Sanford of U.S. Supreme Court to paint mountain landscape scene c. 1922; was first artist to be commissioned by U.S. government under new Public Works of Art Project in 1934, the results of which were property of U.S. Government but loaned to local public buildings. Died Knoxville in 1934. Won first premium at the Knoxville Exposition, 1923. References: Knoxville Journal, July 5, 1934. |
