"The White Shark (Great White Shark)," hand-colored engraving from "Ichtyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere des Poissons (Ichthyology, or Natural History of Fishes)" by by Marcus Elieser Bloch. Berlin and Paris, 1782-1797.
Exhibition Label (Birds, Bugs, & Blooms, 2014): Born poor and illiterate, Bloch dedicated his life to ichthyology, the study of fish. Though his drawings, like the Great White Shark shown here, often contained inaccuracies, his work is regarded as both beautiful and monumental. Bloch's collection of specimens was so important to the development of ichthyology that much of it is still in use at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin.
