Description "Osnabrugensis episcopatus, " Amsterdam, 1643, hand-colored engraving, original map by Joannes Gigas, published by Willem Blaeu

This map of the German province of Hanover is centered on Osnabruck. The large mannerist strapwork and allegorical title cartouche appears lower left and incorporates a view of the city with its many steeples dominating the sky-line, attended by a surveyor. At lower right is an inset of Reckenberg. The map is decorated with a large coat of arms upper right, other small provincial armorials throughout, and a smaller cartouche surrounds the scale. The map was originally drawn by Joannes Gigas (Gigante) for Jodocus Hondius shortly before his death, and this plate was among the 39 Hondius copper plates that were purchased by Willem Blaeu in 1629. He replaced Hondius' imprint with his own and published them as part of his first atlas.
