"Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte," Amsterdam, 1643, hand-colored engraving, map by Willem Blaeu
A map showing the course of the Danube and its tributaries across the northwestern Balkans and the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia, based on the map issued by Gerard Mercator in the early 1600s. The title is within a mannerist strapwork cartouche upper right, and decorated with the coats of arms of the Venetian Republic, Habsburg Monarchy, and Ottoman Empire along the top edge, reflecting the power struggle that dominated this region at the time. A galleon sails the seas of the Gulf of Venice lower left.
