Description "Oriole Nest (Nest vom Widewal)," hand-colored copperplate engraving from "Vorstellung der Vögel in Deutschlandes und beyläufig auch einiger Fremden; nach ihren Eigenschaften beschrieben (Presentation of the Birds of Germany)," 3rd Edition, 1817. First published Berlin: Friedrich Willhelm Birnstiel for the author, [1733] - 1763.

Exhibition label (Birds, Bugs, & Blooms, 2014): This work comes from the first German bird book featuring European and exotic birds, many of which were drawn from bird specimens in Frisch's and other private collections. The book also included innovations in subject matter and realistic technique, such as strikingly detailed drawings of birds' nests, and the practice of using shading to make birds' eyes "shine."
