"A Plan of the Capital City Moscow," 1818, pen and ink and color wash on cartographic tracing paper, map by S. Rossolovskii (?), after Egor Cheliev
Surveyor, architect, and builder/inventor Egor Cheliev’s Commentary for the Plan of the Metropolitan City of Moscow was originally published by Avgust Semen in 1818. It included an immensely important map of the city, which is reproduced here, possibly by the unknown S. Rossolovskii.
Moscow suffered considerable damage from a fire that occurred during the Patriotic War of 1812. Cheliev played an important role in planning and rebuilding the city in the wake of the fire. His Commentary was updated in an expanded bilingual Russian/French 1824 edition that
also included an essay on the history of Moscow.
