"Study of various lizards and snakes, including Monitor Lizards," hand-colored copperplate engraving from "Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri (Cabinet of Natural Curiosities)," by by Albertus Seba. Amsterdam, 1743-1765. Exhibition Label (Birds, Bugs, & Blooms, 2014): Albert Seba developed a classification system based on his cabinet of curiosities, which attracted the attention of both Carl Linnaeus and Peter the Great, the latter of whom bought specimens from the collection. Seba created the Thesauri with the help of many writers and illustrators. The Thesauri's beautifully hand-painted illustrations and descriptions were used by Linnaeus to flesh out his new universal taxonomy.
