Artist Statement: Mark Catesby's Timber Rattlesnake is an outstanding example of scientific illustration from the Enlightenment, and reveals the artist's keen sense of observation. In response to this work, I created a print that was decidedly unscientific in quality, and which turns more to the Romantic sensibility of artists like Goya and Blake than to the scientific language of a naturalist artist.
