"Comitatuum Bologniae et Guines descriptio," Amsterdam, 1640, hand-colored engraving, map by Willem Blaeu (signed Guilielmus Blaeu) This map shows the northernmost corner of France, a coastal area centered on the important fishing city of Boulogne, or as it is better known, Boulogne-sur-Mer. There are now different names for both large water bodies shown on the map; Mare Britannicum (the British Sea) is known as the English Channel, and the Maris Germanici (the German Seas) is known as the North Sea.
